Massner Signs Free Agent Deal With Heat

Former Western Illinois guard Trenton Massner has signed with the Miami Heat as an undrafted free agent and will play for the Heat’s team in the NBA Summer League.

Massner, a Summit League first-team all-conference selection last season, averaged 19 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. He was second in the Summit League in points per game and led the conference in assists per game. He shot 43.9% from the field and 35.7% in 3-pointers.

“We’re excited for Trent,” Western Illinois men’s basketball coach Chad Boudreau said in a statement. “It’s a tremendous opportunity, he’s extremely talented and worked hard to get to this point.”

The NBA Summer League runs from July 7-17 in Las Vegas. Massner is the first Leatherneck to play in the league since Brandon Gilbeck played for the Denver Nuggets in 2019.

Massner had one of the biggest weeks in Leatherneck history last season, scoring 99 points in wins over North Dakota, South Dakota and South Dakota State. He set a program record with a 46-point game in a win over North Dakota on January 23. Three days later, he hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to defeat South Dakota, and followed that up with a 30-point game two days later to lead Western Illinois to a comeback win over South Dakota State.

Those performances led to Massner being named the USBWA’s Oscar Robinson national player of the week, as well as the Lou Henson national player of the week.

Massner scored 1,075 points in two seasons with the Leathernecks. The Wapello High School graduate started his college career at Southeastern Community College and also played at Northwestern State before transferring to Western Illinois for his final two seasons.
