Massner Named USBWA National Player Of The Week

By JOHN BOHNENKAMP

Western Illinois guard Trenton Massner’s three-game stretch last week earned him the United States Basketball Writers Association’s Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.

Massner became the first Leatherneck to receive the honor, and joins South Dakota State’s Mike Daum as the only Summit League players to win the award.

Massner, a 6-foot-2 guard from Wapello, Iowa, averaged 33 points, six assists and seven rebounds in the Leathernecks’ wins over North Dakota, South Dakota and South Dakota State.

Massner had a program-record 46 points in last Monday’s 82-70 win over North Dakota. He had 33 second-half points, shooting 16-of-21 from the field for the game, including nine 3-pointers.

He had the game-winning 3-pointer with less than a second left in the 75-72 win over South Dakota on Thursday. Massner had six rebounds and six assists in the game, playing all 40 minutes.

Massner closed the week with a 30-point game in Saturday’s 81-73 win over South Dakota State, a game in which the Leathernecks rallied from a 22-point deficit. His 3-pointer late in the second half forced overtime, and he finished the game with nine rebounds and eight assists.

Massner was the Summit League’s player of the week, which made him eligible for the USBWA award. The award is selected by a representative of the USBWA’s board of directors.
