IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum has had a chance to get a good look at his new team.
And he’s not done adding to the roster.
McCollum said on Tuesday he and his staff would like to pick up one more player this summer.
“I think at this time of year, it’s tricky,” McCollum said. “You’ve got to find the right pieces to make sure that you have a good culture.”
McCollum knows there’s different avenues to finding players.
“There’s international (players), there’s the (transfer) portal, obviously there’s reclasses (high school players),” he said. “There’s a lot of things we can pursue. But yeah, definitely looking for one more.”
McCollum’s roster is a collection of familiar faces and some new names.
There are six players from McCollum’s team at Drake that won 31 games and the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles last season — guards Bennett Stirtz, Isaia Howard and Kael Combs, along with forwards Cam Manyawu, Tavion Banks and Joey Matteoni. There are transfers Alvaro Folgueiras (Robert Morris) and Brendan Hausen (Kansas State), along with incoming freshmen Tate Sage, Trevin Jirak and Peyton McCollum (Ben’s son), and returning Hawkeyes Cooper Koch and Jacob Koch.
Having that many players who have played for McCollum before has made it a bit easier bringing this all together.
“It speeds up the process,” McCollum said. “One, it’s just how competitive they are and how they can teach the other guys to compete. And two, just learning the system of what we do and how we interact and all those different things. It speeds it up, so you’re able to scrimmage a lot more. Whereas most teams are doing a lot of individual development this summer, we’re scrimmaging, we’re competing. We’re gonna get after each other.”
“I think we’ve got a head start against other teams in the Big Ten and the country, just because we’ve got six guys (from) the same team,” said Stirtz, who was the Valley’s player of the year last season. “So we’re all bonding together. It’s not just six Drake guys — we all hang out together after practice and stuff.”
“It’s just been about helping guys get to where we’re at, and getting them to know what (McCollum is) about,” Howard said.
Howard said practices are no different than what he experienced last season as a freshman at Drake.
“The mindset is the same,” he said. “Mental toughness every day. And the way you build muscle is to keep working as hard as you can every day.”
Asked to describe the culture of a team under McCollum, Stirtz said, “It’s bigger than yourself. That’s pretty much it. Keep things short and simple. You’re not playing for your own success, but the team’s success.”
The work McCollum did to put together this roster has put Iowa on the list of some national outlets as being one of the “winners” of the offseason.
“We’re an offseason winner because we took six guys off a team that won 31 games,” McCollum said. “Any time you take kids off a team that won so much, that’s a big deal, and that’s what we’re able to do.”
His players were glad to follow McCollum.
Howard was asked what was the deciding factor in his transfer.
“Mac,” he said.
Stirtz said the same thing.
“That’s my dude, and he helps me out with so much,” said Stirtz, who played for McCollum for two seasons at Northwest Missouri State before joining him at Drake. “We’ve been through a lot together.”
