Ben McCollum didn’t have to look far to find the latest player to join the Iowa men’s basketball roster.
Peyton McCollum, the son of the Hawkeyes’ new coach, became the third high school player to sign with Iowa, the university announced Friday.
McCollum, a 6-foot-2 guard who played at Waukee (Iowa) Northwest High School last season, was a first-team all-state selection last season by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association after averaging 13.1 points and 5.2 assists for a team that played in the Class 4A state championship game.
McCollum shot 51.4% from the field, 40.5% in 3-pointers and 84.9% in free throws. He had a 2.30 assist-to-turnover ratio.
McCollum was a first-team all-conference and all-district selection as a junior after averaging 18.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists at Maryville (Mo.) High School, leading that team to the state tournament.
He becomes the 12th player to join the Iowa roster this spring along with Drake transfers Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard, Tavion Banks and Joey Matteoni, Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras, Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen and Hawkeye returnee Cooper Koch.
