Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum has added another player from Drake to his roster.
Joey Matteoni, a 6-foot-9 forward from Overland Park, Kansas, signed with the Hawkeyes on Tuesday. Matteoni redshirted last season at Drake, so he will have four years of eligibility.
Matteoni is the sixth player to follow McCollum from the Bulldogs, joining Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard and Tavion Banks.
“Joey can do a variety of things – he can trigger your offense, finish and shoot,” said McCollum in a statement. “He will be a great addition to help us with our depth in the post.”
Matteoni was McCollum’s first high school signee at Drake — he originally signed a national letter of intent when McCollum was coaching at Northwest Missouri State. He was a first-team all-state honoree at Blue Valley Northwest after averaging 19.1 points and 8.9 rebounds as a senior.
Matteoni is the 11th scholarship player overall on the Iowa roster, joining Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras, Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen, incoming freshmen Trevin Jirak and Tate Sage and returnee Cooper Koch. Ashton Williamson, a guard who is transferring from Florida International, announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes last week but hasn’t signed.
