Ben McCollum officially added a second prep recruit to his Iowa roster on Thursday, when Tate Sage signed a scholarship agreement.
Sage, a 6-foot-7 guard from Weatherford, Oklahoma, originally signed to play for McCollum at Drake, but changed his commitment after McCollum was hired at Iowa.
McCollum, who had to rebuild Iowa’s roster after being hired to replace Fran McCaffery, has gone into the NCAA transfer portal to find most of the new Hawkeyes. Sage joins Trevin Jirak of West Des Moines, Iowa, as prep signees.
“Tate is exactly what we need for the future of Iowa basketball,” McCollum said in a statement. “He’s 6-foot-7, 6-8, can shoot, drive, do a variety of things and guard multiple positions. He is also a winner. We’re excited to have Tate be a Hawkeye.”
Sage was an all-state selection by the Oklahoma Coaches Association and The Oklahoman after averaging 13.1 points per game. He helped Weatherford High School to a 110-12 record the past four seasons, which included winning the 2025 4A state title as a senior.
Sage is the 10th player to join the Hawkeyes’ roster this spring, joining Drake transfers Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard and Tavion Banks, Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras, Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen, Jirak and Iowa returnee Cooper Koch.
McCollum received another transfer commitment on Wednesday in Florida International guard Ashton Williamson. Williamson averaged 7.3 points and 2.7 assists last season as a freshman. Williamson made 16 starts last season.
