Folgueiras Commits To Hawkeyes

New Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum has missed on some of his transfer portal targets, but he picked up a big one on Sunday night when Alvaro Folgueiras committed to the Hawkeyes.

Folgueiras, a 6-foot-9 forward from Robert Morris, was the Horizon League’s player of the year this season after averaging 14.1 points and 9.1 rebounds. Folgueiras will have two seasons of eligibility left.

Folgueiras posted 14 double-doubles this season in 35 starts, including a 15-point, 10-rebound game against Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He was a 41.3% 3-point shooter this season.

Folgueiras, who is from Malaga, Spain, played his high school basketball at DME Academy in Florida.

Folgueiras was ranked the 51st best player in the portal by CBS Sports.

McCollum has added seven transfers to a roster that was decimated by departures after coach Fran McCaffery was fired. Five players followed McCollum from Drake — Missouri Valley Conference player of the year Bennett Stirtz, Sixth Man of the Year Tavion Banks, Cam Manayawu, Kael Combs and Isaia Howard. McCollum also picked up Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen.

Cooper Koch, who played for the Hawkeyes last season, originally entered the transfer portal but decided to return. McCollum also signed Trevin Jirak, Iowa’s Mr. Basketball this season.
