Kingsbury Is Latest Hawkeye To Enter Portal

By JOHN BOHNENKAMP

The transformation of Iowa’s men’s basketball program continued Wednesday, with the last scholarship player from this season’s team deciding his future.

Guard Carter Kingsbury, who originally came to the Hawkeyes as a walk-on, announced that he was entering the NCAA’s transfer portal.

Only one Hawkeye from this season — forward Cooper Koch — remains with the team after the firing of coach Fran McCaffery and the hiring of new coach Ben McCollum.

Five Hawkeyes have new homes. Josh Dix and Owen Freeman are going to Creighton, Brock Harding is going to TCU, Riley Mulvey is going to Siena and Pryce Sandfort is going to Nebraska. Ladji Dembele, Chris Tadjo, Seydou Traore and Isaiah Johnson-Arigu have yet to find new schools. Walk-ons Trey Buchanan and Luc Laketa have also entered the portal.

Kingsbury, the son of former Hawkeye Chris Kingsbury, played in 23 games last year, averaging 1.2 points and 0.7 rebounds.

McCollum continued to add to his coaching staff on Wednesday, announcing the hiring of Luke Barnwell as an assistant coach.

Barnwell has 14 years of coaching experience — he spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Texas Tech. He was a head coach for 10 seasons at Sunrise Christian Academy where he was named the 2021 and 2022 Naismith High School Boys Coach of the Year and led the team to the 2022 National Interscholastic Basketball Conference Championships.

“I have known Luke for a number of years,” McCollum said in a statement. “He is an elite recruiter, excellent coach and has had a ton of success at the prep level. He also has a lot of experience at the Power 5 level with one of the top coaches in the country in (Texas Tech’s) Grant McCasland. We’re excited to have Luke join our program.”

McCollum announced the hiring of Connor Wheeler as an assistant on Tuesday.

Wheeler has eight years of coaching experience at Drake (2024-25), Southeast Missouri State (2022-24), Southern Illinois (2019-22), Southern Miss (2018-19) and Missouri (2016-18).

“Connor is a great up-and-coming coach,” McCollum said. “His career path has been fast and rightfully so.  He’s very talented and will continue to hone his skills at the University of Iowa.  He will help us get to a championship level.”
