Clark Picks Up Wade Trophy, AP Honor

By JOHN BOHNENKAMP

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark added two more awards in her busy Final Four week when she was named the winner of the Wade Trophy as well as the Associated Press national player of the year honor.

It is the second consecutive year Clark won the Wade award, given by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, as well as the AP award.

The Wade Trophy is the oldest player of the year award in women’s basketball. Clark joins Nancy Lieberman (1979, 1980); Seimone Augustus (2005, 2006), Brittney Griner (2012, 2013), Breanna Stewart (2015, 2016) and Sabrina Ionescu (2019, 2020) as two-time winners of the award. Maya Moore (2009, 2010, 2011) is the only player to win the Wade Trophy three times.

Clark received 34 of the 35 first-place votes in the AP voting. Clark and Megan Gustafson, who won the award in 2019, are the only Hawkeyes to receive the honor.

Clark, who won the Naismith Award on Tuesday, now has six national player of the year awards this season. She leads Iowa into Friday’s Women’s Final Four semifinal against Connecticut.
