Iowa’s Caitlin Clark was named the Big Ten’s player of the week on Monday for the 24th time in her career.
That is a new conference record, surpassing the 23 awards won by Iowa’s Megan Gustafson during her career.
Clark won the award for the sixth time this season. She had six all last season.
Clark led the Hawkeyes to a pair of Big Ten wins against Michigan State and Rutgers last week. She had 40 points, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, in last Tuesday’s 76-73 home win over Michigan State. She then had her third triple-double of the season, and 14th of her career, in Friday’s 103-69 win at Rutgers, finishing with 29 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
FREEMAN NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Iowa’s Owen Freeman won the Big Ten’s men’s basketball freshman of the week award for the fifth time this season.
Freeman averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks, while shooting 75 percent from the field in games against No. 21 Wisconsin and Rutgers last week
Freeman opened the week by posting his second double-double, finishing with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, in last Tuesday’s loss at Wisconsin. He made 7-of-9 field goals and finished with three blocks in a career-high 37 minutes. He became the first Hawkeye freshman since Luka Garza to post multiple double-doubles in a season.
Freeman made 5-of-7 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws to finish with 15 points and four rebounds in Saturday’s win over Rutgers.
