Breaking Down Iowa’s Men’s Basketball Schedule

By JOHN BOHNENKAMP

Iowa’s men’s basketball schedule is a mixed bag for fans when it comes to home games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes get six Big Ten weekend games at home — three on Saturdays, three on Sundays, a large number considering schedules of recent seasons.

But Iowa’s best nonconference games are either on the road — at Creighton and Iowa State — or on a neutral court — the Hawkeyes play Oklahoma and either Seton Hall or USC in the Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego over Thanksgiving weekend.

The entire schedule, including the October 30 exhibition game against Quincy University, was released Tuesday. Most of the game times and TV assignments will be released later.

Some notes on the schedule:

• Iowa will open the regular season with three of its first four games at home, including two consecutive to start the year.

– Iowa will open its Big Ten schedule at Purdue (Dec. 4) for the second time in three seasons.  The Hawkeyes played host to the Boilermakers in 2020-21 and traveled to West Lafayette in 2021-22.

– Iowa plays at Iowa State on December 7 before playing host to Michigan in the second December Big Ten game three days later.

– The Hawkeyes will play back-to-back conference road games twice during the regular season.

– Iowa will also play five Friday home games, including two against Big Ten teams – Nebraska (January 12) and Ohio State (February 2).

– Iowa has a stretch of seven home games over a 10-game span from December 10-January 24.  That includes a stretch of four of five league home games in early January, hosting Rutgers (January 6), Nebraska (January 12), Purdue (January 20) and Maryland (January 24).

– The Hawkeyes will play on Super Bowl Sunday for the fifth consecutive season and seventh time in nine years, playing host to Minnesota on February 11.

– Seven of Iowa’s final 12 Big Ten games will be played on the road.
